1955: Back to Less Female Students after a High during World War II

After the end of the Second World War, gender ratios at the University of Vienna – as in many other areas – develop back. During the war, women were needed for work that men could not do because they were conscripted. Now they are pushed aside again as the men return to civil life. At the university, we can see this clearly in the student numbers. In the study year 1945/46 the ratio of female to male students is 1.4 : 1. 10 years later, in 1955/56, the ratio is 1 : 2.4 again.
