1900: First Honorary Doctorate

In 1900, author Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach is the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Vienna. She was never a student or employee of the University of Vienna. The University of Vienna awards honorary doctorates since 1759. Between 1900 and 2021, the university has awarded 224 honorary doctorates. Of those, 16 went to women – 7 % of all honorary doctorates from 1900 to 2021.
